Why am I in Debt? Overcoming Debt Problems

Okay, so I took a long, painful look at my finances.  Where had I accumulated so much debt? Our home is almost paid for, I drive a modest car, I don’t dress in designer clothes.  How did this happen? Where has all the money – and piece of mind – gone?

As I looked, I could see that my debt problems are the result of several different things.

  • First of all, I am what I call a ‘poor pity me’ shopper.  That’s right, if I am tired, feeling down, or even just bored I would shop.  Wander aimlessly through the mall or the Internet looking for something that would make me feel better.  Of course I would always find something to buy and of course, it never made me feel better.  I just thought it would.
  • Convenience is another big part of my debt.  It is so much easier to buy my lunch during to work day than pack one from home.  It is quicker to pick up a pizza on my way home.  Why rent a movie when I can buy it and not have to worry about late fees.  Yes, I have been a big sucker for convenience!
  • Nostalgia – if something tugs at my heartstrings and reminds me of my childhood I am going to be parting with some cash!  The same goes for vacations, trips to an amusement park or zoo. A once in a lifetime event – Disney on Ice anyone ~ wait, that comes around twice a year!  Of course all of these events require a great souvenir!  I mean really, you can’t have too many collector slushy cups!
  • Technology – yes, I am a techno geek!  I can’t wait for flash drives to drop in price.  I had to pay $80 for a 512 mb one.  I know, they are a dime a gigabyte now.  I am the type of person who can stroll through Best Buy and drool – everything is so shiny and new . . . . oops, you lost me for a minute!

So, I have been able to identify what I have spent my money on.  True, not much of it is tangible goods. Well, maybe the slushy cups . . .

So, I am overwhelmed and over my head.  You can see it is time that I become debt free me!
